I recently begun morning meditation. In this practice I spend 10 minutes each morning sitting in the car before
going into the gym focusing on my breath. Breathing In, Breathing Out. Over and over again. Gently pushing intruding thoughts to the side.
As part of this practice, I’ve become aware of myself and others.
Before meditation my thoughts ran rampant. I ruminated about the past and created un-realistic expectations of the future. I was never in the present. I was in a constant state of anxiety.
The benefits of meditation
The benefits of I enjoy through meditation are that I’ve become a better person 1.) Better Thoughts, 2.) Better Focus and 3.) Better Awareness.
1.) Better Thoughts: The purpose of meditation is not to eliminate all thoughts. That is impossible. Our minds where made to think. The purpose of meditation is to focus or train our thoughts. The mind is a great instrument which can create an scenario imaginable, but without training it runs rampant. We need to focus on better thoughts. Thoughts of gratitude, generosity and … These are the thoughts was gain through meditation.
2.) Better Focus: Better thoughts lead to better focus. Focus is the ability to zero in on the present moment. Before meditation I could not focus on the task at hand. My mind constantly wondered. Now, I am better able to focus on the present moment because I have fewer thoughts distracting me and better thoughts.
3.) Better Awareness: With better thoughts and better focus we gain better awareness. This means we are in the present moment. We know what is going on with ourselves and are aware of the presence of others.
